Los
Angeles: A vivid proof of the growing ascendancy of Pakistanis,
particularly those who have made the USA their home, was
furnished on September 18 at the glittering Spartacus set
of Universal Studios, Hollywood.

The
occasion was the enactment of the musical extravaganza
Anarkali under the auspices of the National Commission
for Human Development (NCHD), the Pakistan Human
Development Fund (PHDF) and the United Nations
Development Program. The play was staged in Hollywood
to raise funds for NCHD/PHDF’s multifarious
programs in Pakistan.

NCHD
is the poverty alleviation implementing arm of the PHDF
chaired by Farrokh Captain.
Thanks to the untiring strivings of Dr Nasim Ashraf, Minister of State
and Chairman of the Commission, NCHD has begun to impact the life of
the less fortunate segments of Pakistan’s population. In a short
span of time - barely two years - NCHD’s projects in the fields
of universal primary education, adult literacy, primary healthcare,
volunteerism and social mobilization, micro-enterprise for poverty
reduction and capacity building at the grassroots, have begun to crystallize
to breed optimism that the haves-not in Pakistan would share the fruits
of development in the not too distant future.
The
Host Committee responsible for staging the play
in Los Angeles proved equal to the task. Its members
seemed to share the zeal and zest of Dr Nasim Ashraf.
They made arrangements to absolute perfection.
